The Grapes of Wrath

By John Steinbeck · 1998

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

Published in 1939, this novel follows the Joad family as they lose their Oklahoma farm to drought and debt and travel west on Route 66 toward promised work in California. Tom Joad, newly paroled, travels with his parents, his pregnant sister Rose of Sharon, and the former preacher Jim Casy. Road camps, Hoovervilles, and orchard strikes show how growers, deputies, and fellow migrants police labour and land. Interchapters step back from the family to the wider movement of dispossessed tenants. The book is a social novel of migration and work, not a documentary report on any one camp.
