This anthology collects letters, journals, and travel sketches written between 1592 and 1796 by people who crossed Europe on the educational journey later called the Grand Tour. Extracts are grouped by the usual route: France, the Alps, and the Italian cities that were the main prize, with side glances at the Low Countries and Germany. Typical writers include diplomats, monks of leisure, and later literary travellers who note inns, galleries, ruins, health, and cost. Editorial links explain the stages. The book is a documentary mosaic of early modern travel, not a single diary and not a modern guidebook.
