This trilogy follows Titus Groan from birth in the vast castle of Gormenghast through childhood, rebellion, and departure into a world beyond the stones. The first two books are set inside a ritual-bound household of earl, countess, sisters, kitchen, and library, where the ambitious kitchen boy Steerpike climbs by exploiting the castle's ceremonies and feuds. The third book takes the grown Titus into a landscape of factories, scientists, and pursuit, still haunted by the castle's claim on him. Peake's interest is character, architecture, and the pressure of inherited rite. The work is a gothic fantasy of succession, not a quest for a magical object.
