First published in 1915, this novel is set in the Jewish quarter of Prague, where the gem-cutter Athanasius Pernath undergoes gaps of memory, mistaken identity, and visions of the clay servant that legend says Rabbi Loew once animated. Around him move a junk dealer, a student bent on revenge, a puppeteer, and Miriam, whose fate is bound to the street's secrets. The ghetto's alleys, attic rooms, and file of police records form a dream-like maze. The book is an expressionist tale of a haunted self in a city of stories, not a historical life of Rabbi Loew.
