First published in 1872, this short novel is set in the Vosges village of Granpere, at the Hotel of the Golden Lion kept by Michel Voss. His son George and his niece Marie Bromar love one another, but after a quarrel George leaves to work in Colmar. Michel, wanting a secure match, presses Marie toward Adrian Urmand, a prosperous linen merchant. Marie tries to keep a promise of duty while George returns and the inn becomes the stage for family pressure, pride, and a broken engagement. The book is a provincial love story about work and obligation, not a political novel of the kind Trollope set in London.
