First published in 1944, this novel retells the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts. Pelias sends Jason from Iolcus to Colchis for the fleece; the Argo's crew, including Heracles, Orpheus, and Atalanta, meet island tests, the clashing rocks, and the court of Aeetes. Medea, the king's daughter, aids Jason with drugs and knowledge, and the return winds through further lands and killings. Graves treats the story as a reconstructed Bronze Age expedition tangled with goddess cult and local kingship. The book is a mythic adventure novel, not a translation of Apollonius and not a handbook of Greek religion.
