First published in 1904, this novel follows Maggie Verver, daughter of the American collector Adam Verver, after she marries the Italian Prince Amerigo. Adam then marries Maggie's friend Charlotte Stant, who had earlier been attached to the Prince. The two couples live in a close London and country circuit of money, taste, and unspoken knowledge. A gilt crystal bowl offered as a gift becomes a figure for a marriage that looks whole and is flawed. The book is a novel of consciousness and adultery among the rich, not a mystery of theft and not a portrait of American business at home.
