First published in 1969, this novel follows the Corleone crime family in and around New York in the 1940s and 1950s. Don Vito Corleone holds power through favours, threats, and a network of capos; after an attempt on his life, his youngest son Michael, who had stood apart as a civilian and soldier, is pulled into the succession beside the hotter-tempered Sonny and the weaker Fredo. Business in gambling, unions, and narcotics collides with family marriages and vendettas. The book is a gangster novel of inheritance and loyalty, not a documentary of any single real syndicate.
