Synopsis
First published in 1953, this novel is told by the aging Leo Colston, who looks back on the summer of 1900, when as a boy he stayed at Brandham Hall in Norfolk. There he carries secret letters between Marian, the daughter of the house, who is expected to marry Viscount Trimingham, and Ted Burgess, a neighbouring farmer. Heat, cricket, and the adult code of class shape what the child understands and what he refuses to see. The book is a memory novel of a messenger caught between two lovers, not a detective story and not a war narrative.
