This selection gathers Thurber's short comic pieces, autobiographical sketches, and line drawings. Many scenes are set in Columbus households or among New York couples who lose arguments with dogs, cars, and household objects. Recurring pieces include the daydreams of Walter Mitty, family disasters from My Life and Hard Times such as the night the bed fell and the day the dam broke, and mock advice from the pet department. The tone is deadpan report of ordinary panic. The book is a miscellany of humor, not a novel and not a biography of the cartoonist.
