This selection of seventeenth-century lyrics centres on The Garden, in which a speaker withdraws from public life into green shade, fruit, and thought. Other poems include a seduction argument against delay, a nymph's lament over a fawn, mower songs of fields and love, and an ode on Cromwell's return from Ireland. Speakers address mistresses, patrons, and the self; settings are gardens, meadows, and the Bermudas as a place of exile. Wit and classical allusion carry the argument. There is no narrative through-line. The book is a gathering of metaphysical and public lyrics, not a verse drama and not a life of the poet.
