First published in 1837, this history narrates the collapse of the French monarchy and the years that follow, from the last ease of the old court through the Estates-General, the fall of the Bastille, the flight to Varennes, the Republic, and the Terror, down to the Directory. Carlyle stages crowds, clubs, and assemblies as living scenes; principal figures include Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Mirabeau, Danton, Marat, and Robespierre. The prose is oratorical and often in the present tense. The book is a dramatic political narrative of 1789-1795, not a social statistics of the period and not a life of Napoleon.
