First published in volumes from 1906 to 1921, this novel sequence follows the Forsyte family of wealthy London solicitors and company men for whom houses, pictures, and wives are forms of property. Soames Forsyte marries the penniless Irene, who does not love him; her attachment to the architect Philip Bosinney and later to Soames's cousin Young Jolyon splits the clan. Later books follow the next generation, including Fleur and Jon, as the family moves from Victorian certainty into the postwar years. The work is a social novel of marriage and possession, not a legal thriller.
