This anthology, selected and introduced by Brian Aldiss, collects science-fiction short stories arranged from an eighteenth-century planetary satire through late-nineteenth-century catastrophe and mid-twentieth-century magazine fiction to a few later pieces. Typical subjects include first contact, scale and perspective, future politics, alien biology, and the cost of desire across species. The stories are independent; there is no shared future history. The book is a short survey of the SF tale as a form, not a novel and not a history of the genre written as continuous argument.
