Issued in the 1870s, Tolstoy's novel is set among the Russian nobility and the countryside they own. Anna, wife of the official Karenin, begins an affair with the officer Count Vronsky that isolates her from society and from her son. A parallel plot follows Konstantin Levin, a landowner, through his courtship of Kitty Shcherbatskaya, his work on the estate, and his questions about faith and peasant labour. Moscow, Petersburg, and the harvest fields are the stages. The book is a realist novel about marriage, desire, and how a life among houses, offices, and fields is to be justified.
