This anthology collects five short novels from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, written in English, German, and French. The pieces differ in setting and mode: a governess's unreliable account of children and a presence in an English country house; a sled dog's life in the Yukon; a writer's fatal infatuation in a decaying Adriatic resort; a Midlands girl's collision with family and a traveling man; and a Parisian girl's education in how marriages are arranged. There is no frame story. The book is a sampler of the novella as a form, not a single continuous narrative.
