Synopsis
This book sets puzzles and quizzes drawn from English-language novels, plays, and poems: questions of plot consistency, a character's age or money, who said a line, and how a famous scene actually runs. Sutherland states a problem from a named work, then reasons from the text rather than from outside gossip. Typical subjects are Victorian and later fiction, with some drama and verse. The pieces are independent problems, not chapters of a story. The book is a set of literary riddles and answers, not a history of the novel and not a critical monograph.
