Synopsis
This anthology, selected with an introduction in the Edward Leeson gathering, collects comic poems from light satire and nonsense to cautionary verse and parody. Typical pieces include talking animals, social climbers, disastrous children, and speakers who overstate a grievance in regular stanza form. Contributors range from nineteenth-century comic poets to later writers who keep rhyme and punch-line structure. There is no continuous story. The book is a reader in humorous verse, not a collection of comic short stories and not a treatise on satire.
