Synopsis
This anthology collects ghost stories from the nineteenth century into the later twentieth. Typical pieces use a railway cutting, a ship's berth, a wished-for object, an empty house, or a museum visit as the point where the living meet something that should not answer. Recurring furniture of the form includes servants, letters, and a narrator who tries to stay reasonable. Writers range from Dickens and the antiquarian ghost-story school to later authors who keep the apparition but change the tone. There is no shared plot. The book is a survey of independent hauntings, not a novel.
