Published in 1945, this fable is set on Manor Farm, where the pigs Snowball and Napoleon lead the animals in a revolt against the farmer Mr Jones. The animals write commandments of equality and try to run the farm themselves; the pigs take control of the milk and the decisions, drive out rivals, and bargain with neighbouring farmers. Boxer the cart-horse, the sheep, and the raven Moses mark different responses to the new order. The story is an allegory of a revolution that replaces one set of masters with another while the language of equality remains on the barn wall.
