This anthology collects humorous short stories rather than jokes or sketches alone. Typical pieces turn on social embarrassment, club and country-house comedy, animal or servant reversals, and narrators who do not see how they look. Contributors are mainly English-language writers of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a few earlier comic voices. The stories are independent; there is no frame and no continuous cast. Subjects include marriage, money, office life, and the gap between manners and appetite. The book is a sampler of comic fiction, not a joke book and not a single author's collected tales.
