Synopsis
This anthology gathers essays as a form: short prose arguments and observations rather than stories or chapters from novels. Typical subjects are manners, books, cities, travel, politics, and the writer's own habits of mind. Pieces range from earlier English essayists who address the reader as a companion to later voices that test a single idea in a few pages. There is no continuous thesis and no frame story. The book is a sampler of the essay, not a treatise and not a collection of newspaper columns on one current event.
