First published in 1956 as An Introduction to Anglo-Saxon England, this is Peter Hunter Blair's survey of the centuries between the collapse of Roman Britain and the Norman Conquest. Opening chapters follow wars, migrations, and the rise of kingdoms; later ones treat the church, royal government, farming and trade, and the vernacular and Latin literature of the period. Hunter Blair draws on chronicles, law codes, archaeology, and place-names. The book is a general history of early England as a political and cultural formation, ending with 1066 rather than continuing into Norman and Plantagenet rule.
