The First World War
From the Origins of the War to Verdun and the Somme, 1914 - 1916
By Martin Gilbert · 2011
Back to CatalogueThis one-volume narrative history follows the First World War from the July crisis of 1914 through the armistice of 1918. Gilbert moves among the Western and Eastern fronts, the war at sea, the Ottoman theatres, and home fronts under blockade, conscription, and propaganda. He tracks cabinets and commanders as well as soldiers in the trenches and civilians under bombardment. Campaigns include the Marne, Gallipoli, Verdun, the Somme, and the 1918 offensives. The book is a chronological political and military history of the war, not a memoir and not a study of one battle.
