This memoir, from the Italian Tre mesi nella Vicaria di Palermo nel 1860, recounts Francesco Brancaccio di Carpino's part in the Sicilian rising that met Giuseppe Garibaldi's Thousand. The narrator describes the April unrest in Palermo, arrest and confinement in the Vicaria prison, and the May landing at Marsala, the fight at Calatafimi, and the street fighting that forced Bourbon troops to quit the capital of the island. He notes local rebels, Redshirt volunteers, and the collapse of Neapolitan authority in the city. The book is an eyewitness narrative of one campaign in the Risorgimento, not a general history of Italian unification.
