First published in 1975, this nonfiction narrative follows the heavyweight bout in Kinshasa between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, billed as the Rumble in the Jungle. Mailer records the weeks of delay after Foreman is cut, the training camps, the politics of Mobutu's Zaire, and the crowd that fills the stadium at night. He watches Ali's rope-a-dope tactic and the late punches that drop Foreman. Boxers, promoters, and hangers-on appear as speakers and foils. The book is a ringside account of one fight and its setting, not a full life of either fighter.
