First published in 1954, this opening volume of a larger romance follows Frodo Baggins, a hobbit of the Shire, who inherits a magic ring that the Dark Lord Sauron seeks. At Rivendell a fellowship forms to carry the ring toward Mordor: Frodo, his gardener Sam, the hobbits Merry and Pippin, the ranger Aragorn, the wizard Gandalf, the elf Legolas, the dwarf Gimli, and the man Boromir. They travel through Moria and Lothlorien before the company begins to break on the Great River. The book is a quest narrative of a small party under pursuit, not a war chronicle of armies.
