Synopsis
Captain Jack Aubrey in HMS Surprise is sent in pursuit of an American frigate that has been attacking British whalers, a chase that draws the ship around the Horn and into the Pacific. Stephen Maturin continues his dual work as surgeon and intelligence agent, with natural history collected at landfalls. The voyage strains discipline, navigation, and the two men's friendship under isolation and delayed orders. The novel is one campaign in the Napoleonic-era Aubrey-Maturin series, not a history of the War of 1812 and not a standalone first meeting of the pair.
