First published in 1697 as Histoires ou contes du temps passe, this collection of French fairy tales presents household and courtly wonder stories meant for family reading. Typical pieces include a girl in a red hood who meets a wolf on the path to her grandmother; a cinder-swept daughter who attends a ball in borrowed finery; a princess who sleeps for a hundred years; a cat who wins a castle for a miller's son; and a husband who forbids his wife to open one room. Brief morals close several tales. There is no continuous frame. The book is a short anthology of moralized wonder tales, not a novel and not a folklore treatise.
