The Faerie Queene
A Poem in Six Books, with the Fragment Mutabilitie, Pictured
By Edmund Spenser · 2011
Back to CatalogueFirst issued in 1590 and enlarged in 1596, this unfinished allegorical epic follows knights who serve Gloriana, the Faerie Queene, through woods, castles, and moral trials. The Redcrosse Knight escorts Una while pride, despair, and a dragon test his holiness. Sir Guyon resists Acrasia's Bower of Bliss. Britomart, a warrior maiden, seeks Artegall. Later books treat friendship, justice, and courtesy, and Prince Arthur, who loves Gloriana from a dream, crosses their paths. Spenser writes in nine-line stanzas. The poem is a chivalric allegory of Protestant virtue in Faerie land, not a chronicle of Elizabeth's court.
