First published in 1771, this epistolary novel sends the irascible Welsh squire Matthew Bramble, his sister Tabitha, their niece and nephew, and the servants on a tour of England and Scotland. Letters from several hands contradict one another as the party samples Bath, London, and the northern road, while Humphry Clinker, a devout ostler they pick up, becomes entangled with the household and with Tabitha's maid Win. Courtship, illness, and disputed parentage run beside a running argument about cities, spas, and the state of the nation. The book is a comic travel novel in letters, not a guidebook.
