Synopsis
First published in 1971, this novel follows the possession of Regan MacNeil, an actress's child in Georgetown, and the people who try to explain and then to end it. Chris MacNeil watches her daughter's behavior move beyond medicine; a psychiatrist and a priest, Damien Karras, who is already shaken in his faith, are drawn in; an older exorcist, Lankester Merrin, is called for the rite the Church reserves for such cases. The setting is domestic Washington and the rooms of a single house. The book is a theological horror novel, not a medical case history.
