First published in 1878, this novella brings the Baroness Eugenia Munster, morganatically married to a German prince, and her painter brother Felix Young from Europe to the New England countryside to visit their Wentworth cousins. The household is Unitarian, wealthy, and reserved. Felix falls in love with Gertrude Wentworth; Eugenia considers a match with the traveled Robert Acton while testing how much freedom the family will allow. Culture, money, and sincerity are the grounds of conflict. The book is a social comedy of transatlantic manners, not a study of actual German courts.
