The Epic of Gilgamesh
Babylonian Epic Poem and Other Texts in Akkadian and Sumerian
By Akkadian,Sumerian · 2010
Back to CatalogueThis ancient Mesopotamian narrative, known from Sumerian poems and a later Akkadian epic, follows Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, and Enkidu, the wild man created as his match. After they kill Humbaba in the Cedar Forest and slay the Bull of Heaven, the gods punish them; Enkidu dies, and Gilgamesh travels to the world's edge to seek Utnapishtim, survivor of the Flood, and a remedy for mortal life. He learns the limits of that search and returns to the walls of his city. The work is a heroic poem about friendship and death, not a chronicle of a historical reign.
