Synopsis
This history reconstructs how German Enigma machine ciphers were broken before and during the Second World War. Sebag-Montefiore begins with Polish mathematicians who first reconstructed the military machine, then follows British work at Bletchley Park, the capture of codebooks and wheels from weather ships and U-boats, and the naval struggle in the Atlantic that made those captures urgent. Engineers, sailors, and intelligence officers appear beside the cryptanalysts. The book is a narrative of signals intelligence in one war, not a technical manual for the machine and not a novel.
