Synopsis
First published in 1955, this book treats the wild plants of Britain as a cultural as well as a botanical subject. Grigson arranges species with their scientific and vernacular names, then gathers the folklore, food and medicinal uses, and literary mentions attached to each. He is as interested in what country people and poets called a plant as in how a botanist classifies it. County names, superstitions, and older herbals supply much of the detail. The work is a discursive flora, not a pocket key for identification in the field.
