Synopsis
This three-volume narrative history, first issued from 1955 to 1964, follows the collapse of Charles I's government from the Scottish crisis of the late 1630s through the wars of the 1640s to the king's trial. Wedgwood traces the King's Peace as trust fails among court, parliament, Scotland, and Ireland; the King's War as armies form and battles such as Marston Moor and Naseby decide campaigns; and the last weeks in which Charles is tried as a man. Figures include Pym, Cromwell, Rupert, and Montrose. The work is a political and military narrative, not a social census of the period.
