Synopsis
First published in 1951, this novel is narrated by Maurice Bendrix, a novelist in wartime and postwar London, who has an affair with Sarah Miles, wife of a civil servant. A bomb that strikes Bendrix's flat ends the affair from his side of the story; years later jealousy and a private detective reopen the question of why Sarah left him. The narrative moves between the affair, the investigation, and Sarah's own record of a vow and a turn toward faith. The book is a novel of love, hatred, and belief, not a detective story in the ordinary sense.
