Fat Charlie Nancy, a timid Londoner, learns at his father's funeral that the dead man was Anansi, the West African and Caribbean spider-god of stories, and that Charlie has a brother, Spider, who inherited the trickster gifts. Spider arrives, takes over Charlie's flat and his fiancee Rosie, and the two are drawn into family business among gods, a murderous employer named Grahame Coats, and the islands where their father was known. The novel is a comic fantasy about inheritance and voice: what happens when a man who cannot tell stories meets the brother who is one, and when a god's sons must settle their father's debts.
