This multi-volume history of England in the reign of Elizabeth I, begun in 1950, treats society, overseas expansion, and cultural life as related parts of one period. Rowse describes counties, classes, and local government; the voyages, privateering, and plantation that pushed English power abroad; and the manners, households, and arts of the later sixteenth century. The queen, ministers, sailors, and writers appear as actors inside that structure rather than as isolated portraits. The work is a social and political survey of one reign, not a single-volume popular life of Elizabeth.
