The Early History of Rome, Books I-V of the History of Rome from Its Foundations, Appendix and Bibliography

By Livy · 2006

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This is the first five books of Livy's history From the Founding of the City, written under Augustus. They run from Aeneas and the Alban kings through Romulus, the remaining Roman kings, the expulsion of Tarquin, and the early Republic: the struggle of patricians and plebeians, Coriolanus, the decemvirs and Verginia, wars with neighbors, and the Gallic sack of Rome. Livy presents speeches, prodigies, and moral examples alongside campaigns. The work is annalistic national history, not a modern excavation report and not a biography of Romulus alone.
