Dove Cottage

The Wordsworths at Grasmere 1799-1803, Being the Grasmere Journal

By Dorothy Wordsworth · 1966

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This volume presents Dorothy Wordsworth's Grasmere journal from the years when she and William lived at Dove Cottage, together with selected letters by both siblings. The journal notes walks by the lakes, weather, garden work, illness, visitors including Coleridge, and the household's daily meals, and it records scenes that later appear in William's poems. The letters extend the same domestic and literary circle. There is no invented plot. The book is a day-to-day record of a Lake District household around 1800, not a biography of the poet and not a guidebook to Grasmere.
