This selection draws on Letters from an American Farmer, first published in 1782, and on later sketches of colonial life. Writing as a farmer in the middle colonies, Crèvecoeur describes soil, crops, and the mixing of European peoples, then the farms and fisheries of Nantucket and the Carolinas. Later pieces turn to the Revolutionary War, when neighbors divide, militias demand oaths, and the speaker, loyal to neither side with ease, faces confiscation, flight, and the wreck of a household. The volume is a set of letters and sketches of rural America under strain, not a military history of the war.
