This work of evolutionary biology explains how species arise and how biological diversity is organized, from adaptive radiation on islands and in rain forests to the history of mass extinctions in the fossil record. Wilson then turns to the present: habitat destruction, introduced species, and the accelerating loss of populations, especially in the tropics. He argues that the current wave of extinction is human-caused and sets out what would be required to slow it. The book is a scientific essay on biodiversity and conservation, not a field guide and not a policy white paper alone.
