First published in 1881, this novel follows Isidora Rufete, a young woman who arrives in Madrid convinced that papers left by her confined father prove she is the illegitimate heir of the Aransis family. She rejects ordinary work, spends freely, and attaches herself to Joaquin Pez, a charming spendthrift of better birth, while lawyers and the marchioness test her claim. Cheap lodgings, fashionable rooms, and the streets of the capital form the field in which illusion and cash collide. The book is a realist novel of inheritance and self-invention, not a romance of recovered nobility.
