The Diary of a Young Lady of Fashion in 1764-5

By Magdalen King-Hall · 1982

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

Published in 1925 as if it were an authentic eighteenth-century journal, this is a novel in diary form about Cleone Knox, a young Irishwoman who leaves a country house for Dublin, London, and a continental tour in 1764-65. She records balls, clothes, suitors, and the irritations of chaperones and relations, in a voice that mimics period spelling and gossip. The book was later acknowledged as fiction by Magdalen King-Hall. It is a pastiche diary of fashion and travel, not an edited historical document.
