First published in 1947, this diary was kept by Anne Frank while she, her family, and others hid in a secret annexe in occupied Amsterdam from 1942 until their arrest in 1944. She addresses an imagined friend, records quarrels and intimacies in close quarters, her studies and reading, and the fear of discovery, and she reflects on becoming a writer. The outside war enters through radio news and the helpers who bring food. The book is a wartime private journal, not a history of the Dutch occupation as a whole.
