These are the diaries of Thomas Turner, a shopkeeper, undertaker, and parish officer in the Sussex village of East Hoathly, covering 1754 to 1765. Turner records sales and debts, churchwarden business, heavy drinking and attempts to reform, sermons, meals, and a strained marriage, together with visits, deaths, and the small politics of a Wealden village. The entries are frequent and domestic. The book is a tradesman's daybook of mid-Georgian rural commerce and conscience, not a county history and not a novel of village life.
