An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations
By Adam Smith · 2008
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1776, Adam Smith's treatise examines how nations produce and distribute wealth. He describes the division of labour, the role of self-interest and exchange in markets, the formation of prices and wages, and the historical move from hunting and pasturage to commerce. Later books treat stock, the progress of opulence, systems of political economy, especially mercantilism, and the revenue of the sovereign: taxation, public debt, and public works. The argument favours open trade and limited privilege. It is a work of political economy, not a narrative history of a particular war or reign.
