The Diary of a Country Parson
The Revd James Woodforde
By The Reverend James Woodforde · 2015
Back to CatalogueThese are the diaries of James Woodforde, an Anglican clergyman, covering his years as a fellow at Oxford and, at length, his life as rector of Weston Longville in Norfolk in the later eighteenth century. He notes services, tithes, parishioners, journeys, cards, and, with particular care, what was eaten at his own table and at neighbours'. Weather, prices, and illnesses appear beside small charities and local disputes. There is no thesis. The book is a country parson's daybook of food, duty, and rural routine, not a treatise on the church.
